Hiiiiiii, I'm Dee Williams, an LA-based portrait and fashion photographer. My work centers around stories of the African diaspora, inspired by the rich diversity of unique cultures and communities. My love for photography began in high school; I was that girl who always had a digital camera on me with a Facebook and Myspace page filled with thousands of photos. It wasn't until I was 26, living in New York City, that I decided to take my craft professionally. It's been lit ever since. 📸
I'm passionate about photography because, for so long, Black and Brown communities have been photographed by outsiders. Our stories have been told and sold by people who do not live in our communities. I make images because I also hate writing and talking, I'm a visual person, and I find ease in storytelling through photos.
I've been a storyteller since high school. My uncle (RIP) introduced me to the craft. My uncle was tall, quiet, and stoic, but his smile when he showed me his newly developed film inspired me to pick up a camera.
My favorite part of photography is the responses I get from the people I photograph. THE SMILES! They make me so happy. Not everyone has access to editorial-style photo opportunities, so I make it my mission to create images with the community around me.
